Singer Sewing Machine
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
It works great and appears to be a quality sewing machine. It is easy
to use and does everything I expect it to to do. I love it.

Good Deal
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I haven't used alot of the features yet but this seems to be a pretty good machine for the price. I really like the drop in bobbin. I was glad to see it has an automatic needle threader but I'm having trouble getting that to work.

Very Good Model For Beginners
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
As a beginning sewer, I've only had the machine three weeks but I've taken 3 classes at Joann's Crafts and have 4 more lined up. Although one can learn a lot by simply using the machine, it's amazing the tips you can learn from experienced instructors and sewers. TAKE CLASSES ~ anywhere ~ if new! Most problems I've had have been due to the most common errors beginners make: misthreading either bobbin or machine. For instance: when done sewing, my teacher taught me to pull threads straight back to cut, b/c if pulled to side the bobbin thread slips out of second groove and messes up next seams. I kept wondering why it worked on a few seams and then goobered up the bottom and had to be ripped out and rethreaded! Now I rarely have that problem.

I love the automatic threading feature of the 7442 for those over-40 eyes but miss the Drop & Sew bobbin feature my grandmother had ("Drop In" bobbin is NOT the same thing, very misleading). The new machine is much easier to thread than hers ~ which is good since you have to do it every time you wind a bobbin or change thread colors. (My inherited machine from grandmother was stuck on straight stitches only and used VERY infrequently for minor repairs too big to be done by hand)

Although I originally had my heart set on an entry-level Brother embroidery machine, after talking with a number of experienced sewers and reading the three pages in that on-line manual referring to how to set and adjust tensions, I decided to get a beginner machine with automatic tension. I've not been disappointed there since the 7442 has gone from two to thru 10 (yes, ten) layers of denim without hesitating or growling.

I am learning tote/purse making and quilting so am working with multiple layers of material, batting and fusible fleece. The foot lever only holds in the first position and does not go high enough for some of the topstitching I've wanted to do. When the foot lever has to be held up with right hand while trying to work thick materials under the needle with the left, it's very difficult for a right-hander.

Thirty stitches should have been enough but I find I am doing a lot of decorative finishes and topstitching so in hindsight I should have looked into more stitches.

So yes, it's a great entry level, beginner, basic or back-up machine but I may be one of those unfortunate enough to out-grow it quickly.

So Far, I LOVE IT
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have a Singer that I bought in the late sixties. But I wanted to get one with more features than Zig Zag!!! This Sewing Machine was easy to thread and runs so smooth, not to loud and the stitches are great. The price was also great for all that it does. Now I can sew up some really cute little clothes for my two new Grand-Daughters and new Great-Grand-Daughter all under 6 mos. old. This Machine will make it all fun.

great product - don't buy from amazon
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This sewing machine is wonderful but don't buy it from Amazon. I tried twice, both times they tried to sub in lower quality Singer Sewing Machine 7422. That model retails regularly at Walmart for 179.99. Called Amazon customer service to see if there was anyway they could guarantee that if I ordered it again I would actually get the model request. All I got was the run around and rude treatment. Basically they said to check back o the site in a few weeks to see if the item was still posted and try again. I now have no faith in amazon, so I took my business elsewhere. I got a brand new machine, no shipping charge for 169.00 on Ebay - and it was delivered in 2 days! Way better treatment than Amazon

sewing machine
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Haven't used the machine much yet, but satisfied so far. I have limited sewing skills and ambitions and this machine meets my skill level without too many extra bells and whistles. It is as described in the product listing. The only improvement in the listing I could suggest is a more detailed description of the attachments included. I had to go the manufacturer's site for that and was still not entirely confident that all attachments would be there - they were.

Don't buy this machine
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought this machine in June '07. It sewed fine for about 3 mo. Then I started having trouble with the auto tension. I finally sent it in to try to get it repaired. I was told by the repair center, that the part is no longer available, and sent the machine back, un-repaired. Now I'm stuck with trying to return it for a 'aprtial refund'. This machine is not worth considering. I wouldn't take one for free!

3 year lifespan!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
After 3 years it just died. I was so happy at first because it seemed to do so much. But lightweight made some jobs like upholstery fabric difficult. Might be ok for mending but if you are a sewer...beware.
I thought since it was a Singer I could get rid of my 60's Brother and I did...boy am I sorry. It would have still been working and now I have no sewing machine.
Sorry Singer, you are losing it.

Terrible Machine- stay away!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased this machine less then one year ago. It has been repaired three times since; twice for the take up lever disconnecting and falling into the casing. My hope was to use this machine to do machine quilting and I have had to resort to doing most of the work by hand. My next purchase will definitely NOT be a Singer. The repair costs have almost equalled the purchase cost. Not a good deal. This machine has inferior quality and workmanship. Made in China.

I will be buying a new machine soon and it definitely won't be a Singer. Bernina here I come!

Don's wife.....

Ok, but needle threader is a problem
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
This is an ok machine, especially for light sewing. However, like several others, the hook for the Auto Needle Threader is missing from mine so that feature does not work. Very disappointed that such a feature that Singer touts as a major item for their product would be missing from some machines. This was one of the reasons I bought this model. Singer will not get my recommendation for this sewing machine.

So far, so good...
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I've used this machine several times and have not been disappointed. The instruction book is clear and concise (I love concise) and so far, the machine has performed exactly as promised. Set-up time was minimal and the machine is easier to thread and much "smoother" and less noisy than those I have used in the past. Additionally, the machine comes with an accessory kit that includes everything you need to get started AND extra needles.

Very pleased with this purchase.

SURPRISED AT SINGER'S POOR QUALITY
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This machine broke on me twice. The first time was back in April 2006 (I returned it within 30 days). The replacement took 6 months to develop the same problem- grinding noise and needle not locking while winding the bobbin. Don't be attracted by the many features and great price. From the standpoint of an experienced seamstress, this machine is poorly crafted and jamms easily. Caveat Emptor.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
It's been 30 years since I even touched a sewing machine. Within 48 hours of receiving this one, I've already completed 3 projects! The manual has easy-to-follow Quick Start guides. There is also a very helpful instructional dvd, which shows steps for set-up. The machine runs like a dream. I've already used 4 of the "special" stitches. The machine has a nice weight to it; comes with many accessories in a handy, hidden compartment; and, it is very quiet. This machine would be great for beginners or experienced sewers. I look forward to many good years of use.

Novice User
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is a replacement for my 1969 Singer sewing machine that was damaged in a move across country. After reading other reviews for this machine I was hesitate but the price was right. I received the machine quickly and after the intial attempt to thread the bobbin and needle I am very happy with the ease of use.

I would recommend this sewing machine!

Good when working, questionable reliablity
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I purchased this machine just over a year and a half ago for my wife. She's used it for small sewing tasks intermittently since then, but probably hasn't used the machine more than 20 hours in that time. It worked well and met her sewing needs for a while, but one day a couple months ago it started frequently jamming and the bobbin thread pickup started to become unreliable. We talked to a local repair shop about it and they said it would probably cost around $100 to diagnose and repair the problem. Singer has a warranty, but it only covers many parts for 1 year and it doesn't cover labor cost of repairs.

So, unwillingly to spend almost half the cost of the machine on repair I set out to repair it myself and found the timing of the machine was way off. We couldn't figure out how this could have happened since the machine once worked, but adjusting the timing so the shuttle hook would once again arrive at the needle at the right time fixed the issues.

I'm giving the machine a 3 because with the timing adjusted it's been working well again, but I'm concerned that the machine may break down again and require frequently repair (which is either time consuming or expensive depending on whether you are willing and able to do the work yourself).

User friendly and versatile! Perfect choice for beginner or intermediate!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This machine is very user friendly.
I am a beginner and have been using this machine constantly since I got it 5 months ago. I have had no problems. It works well on all the light and medium weight fabrics I have tried (cotton to canvas to thick denim...and quite a few layers of each). I've even used it to do simple machine quilting.
The automatic threader makes setup super quick.
The manual is clear and helpful.
It takes some time to figure out how to adjust the length of width of the stitches, but it does provide you with a lot of different options.
For the money, I think this is a great machine!!!

Fantastic sewing machine, great service!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Despite the review above, I ordered this machine because it has all the features I wanted, AND there was a $25.00 dollar off special. I had seen the exact machine for sale at a very reputable store and decided to take advantage of the deal at Amazon. Firstly, the service was impeccable, I received it in 2 days, free shipping (amazon prime member) and got the exact machine I ordered.

The machine is working very well to begin with and it came with a zipper foot, satin stitch foot, button hole foot and some other small accessories. I love this machine already but I have only had it for one day. I will encourage anyone to try it, the Singer brands are usually very reliable.

Good gift
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this as a gift for my wife. It has excellent, easy-to-use functions, and is a great starter sewing machine. I did not, however, get it from Amazon - I'll come back in a year and tell you whether it's broken, because that's all you get for a warranty on the parts from Singer, so I went with Sears for service.

old seamstress, new machine.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am so pleased so far...I have had a chance to mend clothes, medium and light weight. I have tried out all the decorative stitches, and look forward, on Spring break to much more. It worked consistently, and well, with very even performance. It operated more loudly than expected, however, I am sure to get used to it, as the machine works so well. It works better than wxpected, as the price was so reasonable.

singer 7442 review
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This machine works great. The needle threader does not work. It is not installed correctly. For what I paid, I can thread the needle myself. I have used this machine steadily for the past few weeks. It is a pleasure to use. I miss some of the things you get with a more expensive machine, For this price I have a machine that is fun to use. I would recommend to anyone.

Good embroidery with some bad features
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I bought this to replace a Brother machine that failed after 15 years. This machine's embroidery is superior to my old machine. More stitches and the stitches are rendered better. The action is smooth (but it's the noisiest machine I've ever had). I was pleasantly surprised with the construction of the machine, I was expecting cheap construction for such an inexpensive machine.

There are a few bad features. The machine is not very responsive to the presser foot. I'm used to a machine stopping and starting directly with the presser foot. This machine goes a few stitches after the pressure is completely off the foot. And the needle always returns to the up position, so every time you need to turn a corner or do something where the needle must be down, you have to manually crank it a half stitch. The 'reverse' button is in a awkward place and there is a really annoying 'needle threader' that hangs directly to the right of the needle. This can't be removed or moved off to the side, so it just hangs in your way. It would have been a much better design to just include a cheap little threader in the storage box for the people who can't thread a needle by hand.

a horror of a machine:
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Too bad Amazon doesn't have negative ratings, because one star is WAY too high for this horror of a machine. It's a bad design [wait till you see what you have to do to thread the needle] and is finished off by bad engineering. I bought it because I, an experienced sewer, wanted an auxilliary machine to take along when so I could leave behind the big PERFECTLY OPERATING 1960's Singer given to me by my mother, when she quit sewing for my daughters.

I'd heard bad things about performance of the new Singers, which isn't surprising as the company got sold, manufactury was outsourced to China and god only knows who designed the dreadful thing. But I didn't dream it would be THIS bad.

My biggest complaint is that it's so tetchy. It's almost impossible to vary anything without having it go on strike. It wants to be on automatic, and it wants the trhead length and tension set just so. It doesn't like it when I vary the top tension to make the bobbin thread tighter so I can baste or gather. If the thread or fabric gets bollixed up in the bobbin compartment you have to have a screwdriver to remove the needle plate and bobbin case. Neither of the above problems is addressed in its completely inadequate guide, which gives, in three languages, only the sketchiest of instructions and doesn't in any way address the real-world problems of people who sew. And to think I only wanted it so I could make automatic buttonholes.

The old Singer, a 401, is the last Singer all metal machine. It's easy to use, easy to clean when the thread or fabric gets balled up in the bobbin compartment, easy to manipulate, flexible and forgiving. The bobbin case and the needle plate come out easily so one can get into the bobbin compartment. The guide is a delight. If you can find a 401, buy it immediately. It's a workhorse, and unlike modern electronic machines that are as trustworthy as the old 401, is not likely to cost you upwards of $2000.

Nice sewing machine with a few flaws.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I am new to sewing, but not totally novice. I had helped and watched my mother and grandmother sew clothes for my sister, and took a few sewing lesson in home Eco. So, I would say that I have a very basic understanding of sewing. I have had my machine for at least 1 year.

Things I really like about the sewing machine is the ease of which you can get the machine ready to go, and the automatic needle threader. (I hate threading needles).

Now for the problems with the machine:

The light by the needle is not nearly as bright as my old singer sewing machine. Almost to the point of saying the light is worthless.

The cloth guides are only around the needle area. since the bobbin cover is clear plastic (instead of metal like the old days) I find guiding the cloth to be more of a task. Of course the task is not impossible, but for a beginner, it is slightly annoying.

The sewing machine is extremely light weight. I do not except to get years of service out of this machine.

And I wish there would have been some better instructions included with the unit.

Great Price for a Great Machine!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I got this machine for my Wife, and She just loves it. Lots of features, and the "Needle Threader" works great. I got this Sewing Machine for $100 less than other places online, that I checked out; So I got a Nice Deal!

ugly, wall-eyed buttonholes
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Sews okay, although the foot feed is very sticky - that is, it won't go and won't go and then suddenly takes off like a goosed horse. Has several features I don't like much: needle ends stitch in "up" position which makes it hard to pivot; reverse lever is in a different spot than any other machine I have ever seen or used; "decorative" stitches aren't particularly good or decorative; satin stitch width and length is hard to program in, unravels and looks crappy; and, finally, the buttonhole feature has major problems [1] it starts at the bottom of the marked buttonhole rather than the top (hard to see if you are on course) [2] it works backward from any other buttonhole feature I've seen or used and [3] the buttonholes look very amateurish -even after all possible adjustments the stitches are too far apart so that the buttonhole frays and unravels, plus because the feature has a programmed backstitch to start, it often jams. So far these poor quality buttonholes have ruined two or three garments. The whole machine seems over-engineered. Note: I've been sewing mostly clothes for 50 years now and have used many brands of machine, this isn't the worst but it is the worst for the price.

Singer 7442 sewing machine
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this sewing machine for my teenage daughter. She loves the fact that, unlike my machine, this one is easy to thread. It has a lot of decorative stitches, many of which will probably never get used. So far it's done well on medium to light weight material. Have not tried heavier stuff, like denim or upholstery fabric. I would have given it five stars if it had come with a carrying case. As it is, it gets four.

Nice and easy - A great update
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I can't really say enough good things about this machine. I inherited my first sewing machine from my mother-in-law, an old manual workhorse Kenmore from 1981 that still sews really well. I wanted to get an all-electronic machine mainly for the pre-programmed settings and updated threading system.

Like most electronic machines, this one is pretty easy to use. Pick your stitch with just a few presses of a button, then you're ready to sew. Of course, you can modify your stitch length and width by sliding a lever or two, but it is nice to have everything set to optimum length and width automatically. The machine comes with a good number of stitches, although I honestly don't stray very far from the regular old zig-zag and straight stitches. I will say that the overlock stitch looks absolutely identical to the ones created by a professional serger.

The threading system is pretty nice, too. While it's not quite as easy as the one on the Singer Curvy (where all you need to do is pull the thread through a slot and press a lever) I'm used to the complicated ins and outs of my old machine, so anything is a huge improvement. Singer calls it their "six second threading system" and, so far, I've found that claim holds up. The drop-in bobbin is very handy, especially for someone like me, who is used to fussing with an old-school side-loading bobbin. I guess it would be nice to have a bobbin that didn't need to be drawn up (as seen in the Curvy and several newer machines) but it's not exactly like pulling teeth with this machine. The presser foot lifts up enough so that you can fit your fingers underneath and grab the little "loop" that the bobbin thread makes, so now I don't have to struggle with it at all.

One small gripe I have with the machine is that the needle always ends in the up position. I know this is for easy withdrawal of materials, but it would be nice to have the option for the needle to end in the down position, if one so chooses. I do a lot of applique work that requires pivoting around tight corners, so it would be nice to have this option. However, I've just learned to release the foot pedal a bit early and then hand-crank the machine into the next stitch, leaving it in the down position so I can pivot smoothly.

I think you'll also find that the feeding system is pretty reliable. The machine has a six-piece feed system that has been very nice so far. There's no feature to drop the feed dogs, but the included darning plate should suffice. The presser foot is pretty good at accommodating materials of various thicknesses without having to manually readjust the height (as in older machines). Finally, the little light is a nice, bright LED that remains blessedly cool no matter how long you sew.

Overall, it's just a really nice machine for the price. If you're interested in upgrading to something with all the bells and whistles, I suppose that the Curvy would be a better option, but if you want something that works well, is easy to use, and nicely priced, try this one out.

Singing Singer Phases
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
For the last 14 years I sewed on a old singer machine. My friends laughed at my dinosaur. I bought a new Singer 7442, I never knew how much I was missing.
This machine is the greatest!

Great starter machine!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
We bought this for my 17 year-old niece and it has been a great machine for her. Not a heavy duty machine, but a great machine that does well with day-to-day mending, light-weight sewing. Probably not for upholstery and such! It has a wide variety of stitches, and the directions are EZ! Perfect!

Been using for 4 months now, no problems
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I waited awhile before deciding to write a review for this item because I wanted to see how the machine would perform. I'm not an expert sewer and I mostly do light sewing, a lot of hemming and alterations and items for around the house. I've made a couple of garments on this machine as well. I haven't had any trouble with it at all. It's easy to use and it was an easy transition for me to this machine from my old one. I've used it on various fabrics, from denim to lace and I think it was worth the money we spent on it. I wasn't totally surprised that a lot of the parts are now plastic. At least I can lift it! I remember how heavy my mother's old machine was. The machine provides a great service to me however, so I don't mind the plastic components. I did buy new bobbins though. Plastic bobbins, I don't particularly like. I also don't use the threader bec I just never got into that habit. I love that it can make different decorative stitches too and I've only started playing with those. So far, I don't regret having bought this machine at all.

Singer 7442 80 Stitch Sewing Machine
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I liked the price and all the different stitches. However, I needed a sewing machine that would handle many varied things, such as alterations and heavy sewing. I'm very disappointed in the lightweight quality of this machine. The needle threader never worked and on close inspection my husband found that a tiny hook was missing that was supposed to hold the thread. Also, the food feed stalls, jerks and surges. This machine has beautiful stitches, but is for lightweight sewing only.

singer sewing machine
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is probably a very good item, but I ordered it for my mother who is 77 years old and it was just to complicated for her. Amazon.com was very gracious and took the item back with no hassels. they are great to do business with.

Great Machine
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this machine about 5 months ago and love it. It does whatever I put before it with no issues. I have made lined velvet drapes as well as silk ones that were lined and interlined. It never skips a beat. The machine is heavy unlike many of the new ones.

I'm in LOVE with this machine~
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have been sewing for many years, and this is absolutely the best sewing machine I've ever had! The hand quilting stitch is just the best! It truly looks like hand quilting...only better! And it finishes seems like a professional serger. It's quiet and smooth and the stitches are just perfect every time. I cannot say enough good about this machine. I just LOVE it~ Kate

Sew great!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The Singer 7442 is the first non-tempermental sewing machine I have ever owned. It really does thread in 6 seconds, the needle threader works, the bobbin doesn't jam and it isn't finicky about needles. I just sew for crafts so I don't know how well it would hold up to heavy use, but for me it's perfect. It has a nice selection of stitches and over-riding suggested stitch length is easy. My only negative is that the needle always stops in the up position, and I would rather it stop where ever I wanted it to stop.

I use it every day!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
What I like most with this sewing machine is that it almost does not vibrate. Lots of stitch patterns to choose from, the thread is easy to install. I really recommand it

Very Satisfied
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This machine is very good for the money. I have had no problems with it whatsoever. Very easy to use right out of the box, everything works as it should.

awesome item
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Although I haven't had the time to test all the many features of this product. I can trully say this was a great buy. very easy to use and I'm no expert at sewing but I like it better then my ancient sewing machine that I have.

It is lightweight so I can easily take it anywhere I want to sew.
