This machine is wonderful. Very easy to do once you read the instructions and get to know the symbols on the screens. I am having lots of fun doing monograms and designs on everything. My Grandson wants Micky on all his shirts now. It really was a great buy.

I purchased this machine to do some basic sewing and create personalized gifts for friends and family. I am new to sewing, so I wanted something fairly simple with a few extra features. The manual and demo CD do a good job of explaining how to set up the machine and troubleshoot if something goes wrong. I love all the embroidery options already programmed in the machine and love the fact that you can purchase the PED Basic program to download even more fonts and patterns.

This sewing machine is great to use. I know a little bit about sewing but have been afraid of buttonholes. This machine does it for you! I just followed the directions in the user guide and now I think I’m an expert. I haven’t played with the embroidery stuff yet but I am planning some projects to accomplish in the near future. I like the one touch sewing (without the foot pedal) but I highly recommend using the foot pedal for your sewing. It is easy to accidently sew your fingers.

I just bought this a couple of weeks ago, and have had so much fun playing. I’ve never done embroidery before and have had very little trouble. The machine comes with a very helpful manual and a disc (I haven’t used the disc yet). I did have to do some serious reading before I started to use this machine though as it is unlike any machine I’ve ever used, but I was going in a matter of hours. I highly recommend this machine!

This is a tough, versitile little sewing machine. Though i’m still a novice, I’ve made several leather coats with mine and i’m quite pleased with the flexiblity this machine provides – ease of use with foot & needle changing – auto thread load and cut, multiple thread select and a lot of features simplified to make life easier.

The Embroidery system is simple too – though you’ll probably want to purchase a PED & Card blank atttachent. (you can’t just use a USB stick to transfer digital designs which is a bummer)

However, for a general purpose machine – its a nice little work horse for the price.

I have just purchased this SE-270D. I had a very tough time finding one in stock – NEW. I had an older machine Euro-Pro that I just loved but it quit sewing stitches. I am thrilled that after researching this Brother uses the exact same bobbins (I have 60+ of SA156). It also uses Low Shank Quick attaching feet that all my specialty rufflers, etc. will easily adapt to. It has an extra thread holder that mounts on top of the thread cartridge so you can use twin needles or your favorite thread. It is very versatile. The *.pes format for embroidery is very popular and many companies offer FREE downloads of graphics. You must check it out, and Amazon is the best place I know of. Thank You, Jeanne from Western Montana It has opened up a whole new world of sewing fun and adventures. PERFECT & Flawless, they have included ease of use for everything. It has never been so much fun to sew. Thank You Amazon

This machine is awesome. I am unexpectedly surprised, due to the low cost. I have made numerous projects and they look professional. I HIGHLY recommend proper stabilizer – without it you will fail. Some thin or looser woven fabrics will even need two layers of stabilizer. The fact that you can download off the internet with PED- Basic is phenomenal – I have downloaded both free and purchased designs and they work beautiful – UNLIMITED availability.

    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I was surprised at how easy this machine is to use. Computerized and with a lot of features my other sewing machines lacked, I thought it was going to take me a long time to get it up and running, not to mention getting used to it.

Set up is very easy, manual is extremely user friendly and simple to follow and well illustrated.

This machine rocks! The embroidery quality is over the top – I would have expected this quality from a much more expensive machine. It sews like a dream. More than worth what I paid for it.

There is no way you can mess up embroidering with this machine – the onboard computer walks you through every step. If your bobbin is not threaded correctly, the machine beeps and displays a message about what the problem is – you don’t have to guess! This machine takes the hassle out of threading the needle and bobbin. The Thread Cassette works very well. I was skeptical about just placing the bobbin in it’s case without pulling it up through the plate, but it works perfectly. And you will LOVE the setting to auto cut the thread when embroidering.

The reason I didn’t give this machine 5 stars is because of an issue I and two other friends experienced with winding the bobbin. I recommend you set the speed control all the way to the left (slowest) or no faster than the middle setting (medium speed). I cranked it all the way up on high, like the book said. The thread somehow managed to slip off the bobbin and wound around the spindle below the bobbin. A word of caution: keep an eye on your bobbin and wind it slower than what the book recommends!

I purchased this and the first machine was defective. It was replaced. I received a replacement, which has also died – something with the computer chip this time, not mechanical. It seems one month is the mark where they die out. I’m sure some people have had success, and I WANT success with this, but it just isn’t happening. I just hope Amazon will process my refund as I am wary about getting another defective machine!

I have had this machine for 1 yr now. I have never had a problem. It sews perfectly. All the settings are awesome. Tons of different options. I love how easy it is to thread the machine. You can change the color of the thread in less than 30 seconds. Some of fav. things about this machine are: It cuts the tread for you, you can set the machine to sew by pushing 1 button, so easy to put spin the thread on the bobbin and my favorite thing is satin stiching. I comes with a open foot so you can see what you are doing. It was very easy to set up the embroidery. I love the embroidery on the machine. Mickey comes out perfectly! The directions on this machine are very easy to understand and read. I would highly recommend this sewing/embroidery machine if you love to sew. I also have the Brother serger lock 1034 D that is a great serger for $199.

Brother SE270D Computerized Sewing and Embroidery Machine

I purchased this machine about a week ago. I wanted an embroidery machine and did not want to invest a lot. After reading the directions and gathering what I needed in thread and stablizer I set up the machine for the first time.I absolutely love the way it winds bobins, easier than my Janome. I went through all the basics at first with different types of stitches and learned the on screen prompts with ease. I moved on to the embroidery functions and am very pleased. I picked up some free information on embroidery from my sewing shop and am amazed at what this little machine can do. It is small and light weight but for me that is great. The thing you have to do is start at the beginning and “read the directions carefully.” There are a lot of functions and as far as I am concerned for the price it can not be beat. I do sewing for personal use and my family and think this will be a lot of fun to use. I used a design card by Simplicity that I also bought at the same time and had no trouble at all. Was easy to edit designs for placement and was surprised I was able to do this being new to this type of machine. I would only buy cards made for this machine or download with the Brother accessories you can get for this. I did find out my sewing store can make cards for this machine that work great, and that is because they use the all Brother cards and download tools. I know there are higher end machines and they can do more but for someone that has a good sewing machine and just wants to add embroidery and not spend a lot this is great. I have been sewing for over 40 years and using a new machine can be frustrating. This was NOT true of this machine. For standard sewing it is also great but I will contine to use my Janome for most of that and use this for the embroidery features. The monograming fonts built in are great and one of the reasons I wanted to get into this type of macine.

By the way I bought this from Amazon on a Saturday and it was here in 3 days, free shipping used!

I have been sewing for about a year now, having begun with a mechanical Singer from the 70’s that my MIL gave me and a community college sewing class. I got this machine as an anniversary gift last May. I have waited until I had some real sewing hours under my belt before reviewing.

I have to say that I think this is an outstanding value for the money. It is an easy-to-use sewing machine with tons of stitch features PLUS a very respectable embroidery machine. I can’t imagine needing to upgrade this machine any time in the near future. I love the one-touch sewing (I have yet to use the foot pedal), the onscreen help menu, the auto threader and the thread cutter features. It is very portable, and since you don’t really need the foot pedal, that is one less thing to carry around.

The only problems that I have had stem from the feed dogs wanting to eat some of my fabric. Being such a beginner, I can’t really fault the machine. Trying to do a scallop stitch hem on very drapey bamboo knit is probably the real reason for the mishap. The rest of this project, which was my first knit, went very well.

I have heard of people having bobbin issues with this machine, but the only times I have had bobbin trouble, again, it seems to have been my fault not replacing the parts properly.

My only complaint, really, is that the thread cartridge doesn’t accommodate the long, slender European thread spools, such as Gutterman, without using the adapter. I think this is probably to encourage the use of Brother thread! However, it is really no big deal to use the adapter.

I haven’t done much embroidery, but my husband has done several grayscale Mickeys successfully. We will soon have a Mickey-themed house!

All of the bobbins and feet are easily available online. The overcast foot is great. I can’t imagine really why I would want to bother with a serger now. I recently ordered the overcast foot with the side cutter, but haven’t tried it yet. Too many Christmas project deadlines! I have ordered bobbins and feet from Allbrands. The needles are universal, so there is no issue with using the common brands.

I had a woman at a fabric shop that couldn’t wait to tell me how terrible Brother machines are, and the fact that they are all cheaply made in China now. I do believe that this model is made in Japan, and I’m happy to report that her dire warnings have so far been groundless.

Now, as for service…we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it!

I purchased this sewing machine (Brother SE270D) in March and I don’t have any regrets. I am a novice seamstress and have found the machine easy to operate and the manual gives you a lot of information. Also, the embroidery stitching is gorgeous. I have only done single color monograms and it always looks so great. Professional quality. Also, with some special feet this machince can also SERGE. yes, so it’s really at least 3 machines in one. Plus it has disney character embroidery options. All in all the price is great considering you are really getting value for the money. Buy it you won’t regret it.

Brother SE270D Computerized Sewing and Embroidery Machine Great machine, so easy to use. Embroiders like a dream. Just remember to use a stabilizer(like a facing material) under. This is to keep the fabric from stretching. Extra cards are $40 for 20 designs. A bit pricey, I think. The PED basic to make your own designs is $140 and that is with only one blank card. Overall the machine works well for sewing and embroidery. Even my 10 year old daughter can run it. With supervision of course.

I am disappointed in this machine. Although I am a beginner, and also teaching myself, I was hoping it would give more “self-help” information in the troubleshooting section. I am at the point now where I’ve memorized the manual. I don’t know if there’s really something wrong with the machine or if it’s something I’m not doing correctly. I guess that’s the chance you take with buying online.

I just received this model (a factory reconditioned one) for Christmas. It has exceeded my expectations on ease of use. It’s replacing a mechanical sewing machine that was increasingly more frustrating to use–this one is a breeze! The only thing that would make this a perfect machine is if Brother included with the sewing machine PE-Design Basic. Although 70 designs is a lot, we still need to download designs that are not included (fairies and butterflies). Having PE-Design and a card writer would make this a much better deal.

with the overall machine. I am having a very difficult time finding bobbins and replacement needles. I also can not find the large embroidery hoop. Without extra bobbins it’s difficult to do more than 1 or 2 colors in the preset patterns, therefore I am just doing names. Not much fun to do those over and over again…

I find my machine jams a lot too. Very frustrating.

I have been sold on Brother for years and this machine is no exception! I purchased this machine just before Christmas 2006 and have been having a ball with it. It is SO easy to use. I know I will want to eventually ‘upgrade’ to an even nicer machine with even more bells and whistles some day….by Brother, of course!

  25. LLL Says:

Glad I bought it, but had some problems.
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I’ve had the machine for approximately 3 yrs. I bought it because I wanted to make curtains since they are so expensive to buy. Well, I got pregnant and in the years I’ve owned this, I ended up making several curtains, roman shades, pillows, blankets & both my daughter’s crib bedding. I’m by no means an expert, just took the basic sewing class at JoAnn’s and learned from there.

The embroidery is the reason I bought it. I’ve embroidered my little girls initials on blankets to take to day care. Several of the ladies at day care comment on the embroidery, but I tell them it’s the sewing machine and it’s a piece of cake to do. My family & my husband’s brother’s family went down to Disney for a family trip and I ended up making us homemade shirts. We each had a Disney character in the center of the shirt, our name on the right upper corner & our last name with the year on the back. I thought the shirts turned out pretty good, but not nearly as professional as if I would have paid to have them made. I couldn’t believe the comments we received on the shirt. People asked where we ordered them and the “cast members” were calling us by our names. My family still wears their shirts and I would make them again for our next trip. Lastly, I paid $400 at Wal-mart for this machine.

Here’s the problems I’ve encountered. The automatic threading (which is fantastic) broke and I had to return it. Then the bobbin wasn’t winding correctly and I had to return that one. Every once in a while while I’m embroidering, the machine doesn’t move properly and I have to end up cutting a big hole in the fabric to remove it from the machine. This has also happened to my girlfriend’s machine. I just noticed recently that the backwards sewing function (to secure the stitch) does not work correctly, it’s like the feet don’t move backwards. It could be something I’ve done by accident and haven’t figured out how to fix it yet. With all that said, I really like this machine and when it does finally break down, I will look around at all the different models and if I can’t find something better I would buy this one again.

The Amazon.com service on this order was excellent. However, shipment of this item was handled improperly. There were no “Fragile” markings or other special handling instructions on the package and it was loosely packed in newsprint. As a result, the machine arrived with a broken case and is completely inoperable. At this point I am awaiting disposition instructions from the seller. Return postage is to be paid by the seller.

Thank you, Amazon, for your immediate response and refund of purchase price.

    Not reccomended, very disappointed.
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought the Brother SE270D just under a year ago. I wanted to have a sewing machine for everyday projects, curtains, dolls clothes, hemming, mending and to have fun with embroidery. I never got to the embroidery because I never felt confident that it could operate well enough to handle embroidery.

Just plain sewing had tangling thread, fabric bunching, a selected stitch not performing (eg switching from straight to zig zag took a couple more tries before it would change even though the display showed a different stitch selected), awkward bobbin winding ( you have to be very careful with that) and it cannot handle thicker fabrics. I bound some small towels with cotton binding and it could barely manage to sew. The final straw was the auto needle threader failing. I took it to a Brother agent and was told nothing could be done about the auto threader and that in fact the machine has lots of problems and is a “load of crap”. They had one mounted on the wall sectioned to show the inside and she explained that the construction of the machine made it difficult or impossible to repair if things go wrong. I am taking mine back to where I bought it and will get a full refund.

I received this machine as a birthday gift and couldn’t be happier with it! I thought it would be intimidating to use, but on the contrary it is extremely easy to switch between sewing and embroidery. The automatic threading system makes it amazingly easy to switch from one color to another and the electronic controls are a great addition. Straight stiching is very quiet, and even embroidery isn’t that loud. The only caveat is that you can’t add designs directly, but with the purchase of a SmartBox you can download them free or economically from websites and save the $60 or $80 Brother charges for expansion cards. All in all this is a fantastic machine.

This machine was recommended to me by a close relative that is very experienced in embroidering. I was interested in doing some things but didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a machine as I didn’t know if I would really like embroidering. As a novice, I didn’t want to deal with anything too complicated. WOW, what a surprise. I love this machine!! I have never embroidered anything in my life! Opened the machine and within an hour had embroidered my first design. It was only my initials but I couldn’t believe how easy it was with this machine. I’m hooked! No doubt I have much to learn about embroidering..but for me, I couldn’t have found a better machine! It’s GREAT!!! Very happy I chose this machine.

I have had my new Brother SE270D sewing and embroidery machine for a couple of weeks now and am really happy with it. I love to sew and have been making doll clothes and wanted to add embroidery work. This machine is perfect for that since the designs do not need to be bigger than 4 inches. I was surprised that the quality of the embroidery work for a machine in this price range was so good. The embroidery is beautiful and the machine is easy to operate. The heirloom stitches are very nice too. I am sure that I will enjoy using this machine for many years.

QUICK and EASY thread loading was an enormous help. Just put the thread in, and the machine does the rest! Embroidering is a snap, too! It takes just a minute to switch from sewing to embroidering! And the designs are SO cute! I also suggest that, if you’re not just doing disney stuff, to invest in the Brother PED-Basics card. It lets you download designs from the brother site, as well as most embroidery sites, and put them to your machine! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY BROTHER!

Thanks to Amazon we were able to receive a refund and moove on to a different machine. Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I found that while the sewing machine can do many things,it is poorly constructed. I visited aa Brother Retailer who informed me that they not carry this machine because of the poor construction. They told me that I should be very careful with the thread cassette since they break easily and cannot be fixed and must be replaced which is costly.

I find that sthreading the needle and winding the bobbin threads cumbersome and more complicated then is necessary. I still have not figured how to adjust the embroidery tensions to keep the thread from bunching up under the fabric.

I am not a beginner when it comes to sewing and presently own a Viking 1100 and a White Serger. I bought the Brother as a way to get into the embroidery sewing. I still have the machine and will try to get it working to my satisfaction. If it breaks I will probably send it to the dump.

I will be the first to tell you that I am no seamstress. Over the years I have had several machines, the first a gift from my mother, who was convinced that if only I had a sewing machine of my own, I would learn to enjoy sewing. (I traded it to my sister for a typewriter.) Thanks Mom. My second was given to me by my in-laws after I told them that I did not sew. They also gave me a large set of dish towels after I told them I do not dry dishes. Hmmm.

I bought this machine myself about a month ago, having been seduced by beautifully choreographed quilts and the incredible array of fabrics available with which to paint. I do not care for Disney and I do not intend to embroider anything, certainly not mouse ears. I cannot even imagine how I would use all of the programmed stitches. But I love the way this machine threads itself, cuts its own thread, sews a straight line, switches from one stitch to the other. I like the precision it offers, so that I can place my stitches with meticulous accuracy. In the past, sewing has invariably cost me peace and tranquility for the remains of the day, what with tension issues (both mine and its own) and horrible snarls on the undersides of things. But up in my cubby hole with the view of the lake and the Chugach mountains, on a table where the lighting is good, this machine has been sweetly responsive and even enthusiastic about my projects. As for me, I have finished my first quilt.

I like everything about the machine except the threading system. It is a great machine for the money. It is a second machine for me to take on trips and to classes. It is my first embroidery machine and for the type of work I do it is perfect (small craft projects for my grandchildren). Somtimes the registy is a little off but most people would not notice it.

I am on my second machine and still dissatisfied. I had to return the first machine after only a few uses because the automatic threader quit working and whenever I tried to maually thread the machine, it kept telling me that the thread was out.

Now I am having many issues with the bobbin thread tangling as I sew and jamming up.

This is all just straight stitch sewing, I have not moved on to the embroidery and it looks like I won’t. My first $100 sewing machine worked better, harder and longer than this one has. I wasted $400 on this piece of garbage! I will go back to a cheap Singer!

I bought this machine when it first came out, and have loved using it ever since. I have never had a problem with it at all. It’s great not only as an embroidery machine but as a regular sewing machine as well. It has loads of stitches available, easy push button thread cassette, it cuts the thread for you, threads the needle for you, and I prefer not to use the foot pedal so I just have to push the button to start and stop it. No more foot cramps and trying to find the pedal when it’s moving away from you on slippery floors. The embroidery part does a great job as long as you are watching the tension. I also have the PED design box so the amount of designs you can make are huge. You can also buy the cards that are pre programmed as well. I work in a certain “Supercenter department store” in the fabric dept and I recommend this to all my customers. Brother is a really good company and I really like that they offer a 25year warrenty on all their sewing machines not that I’ve ever needed to use it, even with my other Brother machines.

I love this machine! I’ve not sewn for years and this was just the ticket to get me excited about it all over again. It’s been so much fun playing with all the embroidery designs and trying out different approaches. It’s probably not a “beginner” machine but with a little practice, you can sew like a pro. It does everything but walk the dog!

I come from a LONG line of seamstresses. Both my great grandmothers, both grandmothers, and my mother were & are most excellent seamstresses. My grandmother and mother have an online business using their talent. I, however, couldn’t sew a straight stich, much less THREAD a sewing machine. I had another singer sewing machine and I pretty much made stitches that look like wads of hair. But I desparately wanted to learn to sew. So I thought I would just buy another machine because the other one I had was older.

I was searching for the perfect machine. And well this one was the one I HAD to have! I loved the features and I figured between Mom and Mammaw I could learn it. When I first took it out of the box I sat right there and threaded it. Within about 5 minutes! Right after I threaded it I practiced a few stitches. THEY WERE STRAIGHT!!! I was immediately hooked!

Within a week I had made and embellished an outfit that I SOLD on a popular auction site! The lady LOVED it! Since then I’ve been sewing like I’m outta control! And it’s good too! Mom was impressed! So was my husband, who just knew I wouldn’t use it! LOL!!!

If you’re wanting to learn to sew then this one’s the one you want! The pedal is easy to control so you wont have to worry about running away with the stitches. It also has three sewing speeds, which REALLY helps a beginner. Threading it is sooooo easy, as well as winding the bobbin. Another great feature is the embroidery features. You can even buy different embroidery pattern cartridges. It’s all digital. I am so impressed with my machine and if it ever breaks, I will buy another one just like it!

I should really let my wife write this review. I bought this for her for Christmas as she really wanted to go beyond her very basic sewing machine.

The number of projects she has completed with this machine is incredible; which speaks towards her enjoyment of the art and using this tool.

Downloading new patterns to the machine is extremely easy. She loves the ease of use of the embroidery feature.

Accessories are easy to come by and fairly inexpensive. She just bought a foot and finished off a neighbors prom dress.

We originally looked at much more expensive machines; however, gambled that this machine had the features and price that a hobbyist would use and could afford. Luckily we were right; the machine has worked flawlessly in the past 5 months.

I had been looking for a new machine & happened across this one on Amazon.com’s Daily Deal, and what a deal it is!! The manual leaves a bit to be desired, but with time & practice, this machine should be a cinch to master. All my friends are asking me to personalize various items to give as gifts, so this Embroidery/Sewing machine could actually end up making me money!! Just started using this Brother SE270D, so I can not vouch for all the features, but I am confident all will be “Smooth Sewing”.

I bought this machine because I was interested in embroidery. I have never sewed anything and I didn’t even know what a bobbin was (had to ask my mother-in-law). I have done 5 or 6 embroidery designs and they look great and were so easy! My only problem is I’m not getting much sleep because I can’t wait to do more!

    Fun Machine!
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I purchased this machine in May, after much research. I was looking for a new machine, that had more stitch options, and was easy to use. I came across this one, and decided to order. It has been SO much fun creating all kinds of personalized bags and blankets for the nieces and nephews. The PED basic software allows for even more designs than you can imagine! I would give this 5 stars, but it’s not a heavy duty machine. It doesn’t like going through really thick layers. I have had a few problems with the tread balling up underneath, when embroidery, but it is usually because the thread was tangled up a little, (user error). I have also stopped breaking kneedles as often after I started using a little heavier kneedle. I love this machine. It was a great deal for the price!

Updated review: I had to take my machine in to get serviced, because it started making a kind of clunking noise when I was embroidering. The repairman told me it was a flaw in the machine, that has since been fixed. He was able to fix it, only a new problem arose in the time I took it to the shop to get fixed and when I got it home. The needle wouldn’t move when I was trying to select different stitches. I took it in again, and the repairman was unable to identify the problem, and sent the machine back to Brother, to see if they could figure out what was wrong with it. It has been 2 weeks now, and I still haven’t heard anything. Even though there was this problem, I still love this machine and all that I have been able to create with it! I hope to get it back soon.

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am a self-taught sewer from 1986 and have always wanted to upgrade to a computerized machine and I have always had an interest in machine embroidery. But the cost was always prohibitive. This machine is worth every penny and then some. I started sewing as soon as I set the machine up – which isn’t hard to do. Even a beginning sewer will be able to use this machine without a problem. The same for the embroidery. The only downside is that there are so many ‘accessories’ that I want, I can’t choose!

  54. S. J. Hall Says:

    Exceeds Expectations
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After enjoying success with my brother sewing machine I decided to upgrade to an embroidery machine and I couldn’t be happier with it! It’s pretty easy to use and as a sewing machine it does a fantastic job. Switching between sewing and embroidery is really easier than setting up my other sewing machine so I’ve been using it to do my sewing pretty often. The heirloom stitches look great, it has a twin needle feature and the computer screen will talk you through most problems, including letting you know that your bobbin thread is running low before you sew a nice long seam without any bobbin thread. That’s a fantastic feature for someone like me! =)

So far the only problems that I have encountered have been user ended and the result of not fully reading the instructions before starting. Reading and following all of the instructions in the book will help you get the best results. Also, you will want to purchase and use stabalizer in order to get good results.

When using the larger spools of thread for embroidery the thread cartridge won’t work, but the heavy threads can still be used, they just have to be placed on top of the machine and wound through a little differentlty.

The embroidery work is nice once you get it going, but it’s limited in size to a 4×4 area. Most of what we plan for it will be about that size so it works for us but it’s still a consideration if you are dreaming of doing bigger projects. The Disney characters look really good and they are a lot of fun to make.

It’s a really great deal. All of the other machines that we looked at were priced over $700 which made this the only really affordable option for my family.

    Great machine!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I received this machine as a birthday present a few months ago. Wow! How machines have come along since the old Singer machine that I used to use!

The machine in general – threading the needle couldn’t be easier, you slide in the cartridge and it does the rest for you! It has a foot pedal, but it also has a button on the front of the machine that works the same way if, like me, you are not so talented with the foot work! The machine is lightweight enough to enable you to move it around easily, but heavy enough to be sturdy and sound. The touch screen is fairly easy to use, and it even includes a help section, in case you should get stuck and don’t want to go back to the manual. Overall, it has all the features of older machines, plus some, without being too complicated that you daren’t use it!

It has quite a few Brother embroidery designs and fonts built in, as well as several Disney character designs. All of these are fascinating to watch as it does it’s work and, when finished, they look very professional.

The machine has a slot for cards that you can buy with further embroidery fonts and designs. Basically, you slot it in and they appear as options on the screen. I haven’t yet bought any of these, but I’ve seen them around.

It also has the capability to accept your own designs… for this you will need to buy a card reader and software. The card reader isn’t terribly expensive – about $100, I think – but the software, if you want the latest release, will set you back around $700! My husband cheated on this and managed to buy the version before the latest release at a much reduced cost. I find that this version does all I need it to do, and I will upgrade when the new version becomes outdated following another release.

I have been extremely happy with this machine. I am not an experienced machinist, but it enables me to do so much without overwhelming me.

I would also like to do simple alterations to my husband’s clothes, as well as my own. Now that I have started using this machine, I really want to do more challenging stuff. Not as intimidating as I thought it would be.

I purchased the Brother SE-270D as a replacement sewing machine (I had worn out my other one). I wanted to start embroidering and mongraming, but sewing was my main function. I have LOVED playig with this. The only negative I would say is the auto threader, but if you buy the smaller spools it works fine. Mine is missing something that is supposed to allow you to use larger spools, so I have to improvise and it is a REAL PAIN. For a novice embroiderer I would say it is a good starter machine. The hoop size is only 4X4 which can be prohibitive, but for my use it is fine.Since I use it a LOT for clothing, I love the buttonholer and button features and the auto cutter is convenient. If you are mainly going to embroider, I wouldn’t use this one as color changing is time consuming, invest in a multi color machine with a larger base for true embroidery.

I got this as a gift for my mom (74 yrs old) to replace an old broken Singer she has. I was going to get another Singer but the reviews were not that favorable. After looking around, settled on this model. I have to say, it is pretty good. The auto-threading feature is very nifty. The major complaint would be the bobbin winder…it doesn’t seem to have the right tension and tangles too easily when winding.

Great at First … worked like crap in the end!
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
The work that it did was very impressive. It’s just a crappy machine in the end. It would up and stop working properly in the middle of doing a project. So much wasted thread and materials. My 1st machine lasted about 2 years. I used it for embroidery only. If I would go back and forth from sewing to embroidery, it would glitch up a lot going back to embroidery. Since I have the card program I was able to go out and buy more patterns to use with the machine. That was a nice feature. The machine it’s self really needs to be better made. The hoops also don’t last very long. I would go thru a new hoop about every 2-3 months. They should make metal hoops for this machine. The Large hoop should also come with the machine for the price you pay for it. My second machine only lasted 3 months. I give up, I will not buy another machine.

Hope it’s better than the Brother model I bought on this site
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased a Brother sewing and embroidery machine on this site in 2005. I believe that model, PE-400D, has been discontinued. And no wonder — what a piece of junk! In the first six months of use, I had to take it in for a $169 dollar repair when the touch screen stopped working reliably. Recently (April 2007) it began exhibiting the same problem.

I paid $399 for this machine, which was a huge discount over the prices I saw elsewhere for similar machines. But one more trip to the sewing machine shop and I’ll almost have purchased the thing all over again, with no guarantee that this repair will permanently solve this problem. (Or whatever other problems start cropping up.)

I’m going to donate this machine to some worthy cause, warning them that they’ll probably never be able to do anything but straight stitching. I’ll also make a solemn promise never to buy another Brother product, ever again.

This machine is very tempermental. It jams easily and then tears holes in fabric. If all of the stars “align” you might get a couple good embroidered designs before it stops automatically threading it’s self. I have read and reread the manual and am following the directions carefully, but I still find it has problems about 50% of the time. I’m thinking that I should have spent more money on a better model.

It really made machine embroidery fun and addicting and I haven’t even used the Disney desgins yet. It’s a very light weight machine and stores away easily. I have had mine for probably about 3 years now and never had a problem with it. Your sewing area is only 4×4 but you really can do tons of projects in that size hoop.

You don’t have to purchase expensive embroidery machines because this is a great value! Of course you will still need to purchase the PED Basic software and card reader to get your designs from your computer to your machine.

And for embroidery, it could not be easier or more user-friendly. When I first got this machine I was a little intimidated, but finally Christmas forced me to try the embroidery. I was shocked at how easy it was. You just set it up and it does all the work. Would recommend to anyone on a budget that wants to try embroidery.

I must admit, I was a bit skeptical of this magical little do all machine. I bought this for my wife as she has been in the need of a new sewing machine for a long time. When the package came we excitedly removed the machine from its shipping box and hooked it all up. We got it all up and running (okay she got it running)and quickly was able to create a new bobbin. Then set the threading up. That part was awesome. Talk about “even a man can do it with out screwing up”. I thought it was real cool. We attached the embroidery unit. Of course we did have one small mishap. That is what I call the Man Phase. Yes I wanted to see this machine spit out Mickey so I got some material and let it go. Only one problem…I forgot to change the foot. It worked…just wasnt to pretty! I know…if men would just read the instructions!

All in all, this machine has been awesome! My wife has already made a set of curtains and started monogramming like crazy. We have for boys so you can imagine the disney embroidery cards we have to get. And yes they each like different things. Thats going to get expensive! I would suggest that you purchase the Software kit that comes with a flash card and flash writer. You can get various levels of the software. We got the pro edition and we are going to have a go at creating some custom designs. All in all…this machine was absolutely great from the get go. And that comes from a man with limited sewing knowledge. This machine is absolutely “Man” friendly!
